Bricks can be available in a range of different colours, which are determined by impurities in the clay. In our experience, the best bricks often combine plastic or mallable clays with sandy or more brittle clays in order to overcome the tendancy of the softer clays to shrink during their firing. They can have a wonderful texture, often caused by the sand sprinkled into the mould to stop the clay sticking to it.

Bricks are laid to a specified arrangement to ensure a structures' maximum strength, load bearing property and a uniform appearance. This arrangement is called a bond. No brick should be laid directly on top of another: instead, they should overlap the joints between the other bricks above and below them so that there can be no straight joints running up the wall.

Brick work, or more specifically, brick-laying, can vary from building a small garden wall, ranging up to the construction of full extensions. Brickwork can also be used in order to finish openings such as doors or windows in buildings made of other materials.
