Tips on choosing the colours for the job:

Think about which colours to use, browse over different swatches at home and look at them in relation to the room and its furnishings. Make sure you look at them in both artificial light and daylight - as different lighting can change the appearance of colours.

The floor coverings and the furniture are items that you don't change every time you decorate. If you have an off- cut of carpet, furnishing fabric or curtain, take them with you when you're choosing the paint as this makes planning a scheme much easier.

The size and shape of a room must also be taken into account when deciding on a colour scheme. Warmer colours will make a cold room feel cosy, while cool colours can create a fresher atmosphere in a smaller room.

By using colour schemes in the right way, it is possible to make the dimensions of your rooms appear different. Warm, strong colours will make the walls appear nearer, as well as strong patterns. As expected, the opposite happens if cool colours are used, creating the impression of a bigger space.

If you believe that a ceiling in your house is too high, a strong colour will make it appear lower. The more colours you use, the warmer and cosier the effect will be.
